Wednesday Night Magic

Harold, Nick and Rosie came by tonight and Harold, Nick and I got in three hands of Magic.  Harold's recent losing streak turned around tonight with him winning two of the four games and Nick and I splitting the other two.

We had one interesting occurrence that I would love to hear feedback on.  Nick had a Blood Moon in play and Harold had an Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth in play.

The question is, does Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth retain the text or is it simply a Mountain?  My take is that it would become a Mountain with no text.  Please comment!

Wednesday Night Magic

Harold and Nick (and Rosie) came over for Magic tonight and we were able to play three hands.  Nick continued his winning ways winning the first and third hands.  I won the middle hand, amassing at one point eighty-eight life points thanks to the lovely lady above.  Eventually she was killed but it was far too late for Nick and Harold.  Good, close games mainly.  We also made plans to assist Harold with putting some paint on some Sci-Fi Hirst Arts molds that he has ready to go.

Wednesday Night Magic

Nick, Harold, and I played three hands of Magic the Gathering last night.  The first match saw Nick and Harold both with difficult draws of either too much mana or not enough and I handily beat them with my Elf deck from the Goblins versus Elves set.  The other hands saw me playing my dreaded Goblin King deck and coming up just short as Nick was able to take me down before I could begin concentrating on him and my white flyer deck against which Nick again outlasted Harold and I and earned the win.  For the night it was John - 1, Nick - 2, Harold - 0.  Another good night for Nick.  Harold was heard to state in true Shawn'ian fashion, that he would win more if everyone did not pick on him.

Wednesday Night Magic

Nick, Jeff, Harold and myself were in attendance at this week's magic game.  This was a session for the record books since not only did we play three games rather swiftly but Nick came out on top in all three games.  The first game was a free-for-all that may have been the quickest multi-player game that we have ever had due to Harold's immediate playing of "Black Vise."  Afterwards we played two, two-headed giant games with Nick and I winning the first and he and Harold the second.

Bastille Day 2010 - Magic the Gathering

Harold, Jeff, Nick and Rosie came over for our Wednesday Night Magic game.  Harold won the first two free-for-all hands and then we played two headed giant.  Nick and I playing Elves beat Jeff and Harold playing Goblins.

Carcassonne - 7 July

Our normal Magic the Gathering/Never Winter Nights Wednesday gaming session played out a little differently this week.  Chief card flopper and Magic aficionado Harold was away on vacation so Jeff, Nick, Rosie and I instead tried out another new game from Origins, Carcassonne by Rio Grande Games.  Carcassonne is a tile laying game where you place tiles building roads, cities, cloisters, and fields.  You claim these features using one of your miniature people or Meeples as they are known.  More points are scored for longer roads and larger cities.  It is a very simple but elegant game that is always different due to the various ways that the tiles are placed.  It is also a beautiful game as the tiles and meeples are very nicely produced.

We played the first game without the included river expansion.  Nick won this game.  The second game we added the rivers expansion which adds further constraints to how the tiles are laid.  After a tight game where we experienced our first "Cloister F$@*" (nearly all of the cloisters clustered together) Nick and Jeff ended up tied at the end.  Everyone really enjoyed the game.  We all look forward to adding on the various expansions that are available.

On a related note, there is an iPhone app available for Carcassonne that is quite good.  I have been playing with it for a while and it does an excellent job of translating the game to a handheld device.

Magic the Gathering - 30 June 2010

One of the things that I want to be able to do with this blog is to track the games that I play and to a lesser extent to record how I do in those games.  Last night Harold, Nick and myself played Magic the Gathering.  We played four hands of "free for all."  Nick won the first two hands and I won the last two.  Rosie came as well but she did not play.
